Francophone Studies Presents: Playtime

7:00pm Francophone Studies Presents: Jacques Tatis PLAYTIME Director: Jacques Tati France Language: French Running Time: 124 Jacques Tatis gloriously choreographed, nearly wordless comedies about confusion in an age of high technology reached their apotheosis with PlayTime. For this monumental achievement, a nearly three-year-long, bank-breaking production, Tati again thrust the lovably old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot, along with a host of other lost souls, into a baffling modern world, this time Paris. With every inch of its superwide frame crammed with hilarity and inventiveness, PlayTime is a lasting record of a modern era tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion. -Jacques Tatis 1967 masterpiece still holds up as a feast of subtle sight gags, playful noise and, above all, visual wonders.- – Dave Calhoun, Time Out -Tati’s despair is modulated by a sense of wonder.- – Richard Brody, New Yorker

Food on Film: Bugs

7:00pm Food on Film: BUGS Director: Andreas Johnsen Running Time: 76 minutes Will eating insects save our Earth Insects as food is a hot topic. Particularly over the last few years, since the UN recommended edible insects as a resource to combat world hunger, they have been heralded for their taste by cooks and gastronomes, for their low ecological impact by environmentalists and for their nutritional content by public health scientists. It would seem that insects are the new superfood that will fix all our problems of global food security. For the past three years, a team from Copenhagen-based Nordic Food Lab, made up of chefs and researchers Josh Evans, Ben Reade and Roberto Flore, has been travelling the world to learn what some of the two billion people who already eat insects have to say. In BUGS, film director Andreas Johnsen follows them as they forage, farm, cook and taste insects with communities in Europe, Australia, Mexico, Kenya, Japan and beyond. During their journey they encounter everything from revered termite queens and desert-delicacy honey ants to venomous giant hornets and long-horned grasshoppers.

Hayes Carll

8:00 pm show. One of our favorite performers Hayes Carll returns to the Stuarts stage for a solo performance. Hayes Carll is at the forefront of a generation of American singer/songwriters. A Texas native, his style of roots-oriented songwriting has been noted for its plain-spoken poetry and sarcastic humor. He was nominated for a 2016 Grammy award for Best Country Song, and American Songwriter awarded him with Song of the Year for -Another Like You- in 2011, the same year he was nominated for Artist of the Year at the Americana Awards. Now Hayes is returning with a powerful and raw set of songs produced by Joe Henry entitled Lovers and Leavers. The record marks a new chapter for Hayes - he has gone through much personal change in the 5 years since his last release, and he mines the depths of these experiences on this record. Sonically, he has stripped away some of the country sounds that marked his previous records, thus highlighting his well-worn voice and placing his straightforward and heartfelt lyrics at the center. Spring Sustainability Series - Sonic Sea, Pangolin

7:00 pm Sonic Sea Directors: Michelle Dougherty, Daniel Hinerfeld Sonic Sea is a 60-minute documentary about the devastating impact of industrial and military ocean noise on whales and other marine life. The film begins with a mystery: the unexplained stranding and mass mortality of several species of whales in the Bahamas in March 2000. As the mystery unfolds, the film explores the critical role of sound in the sea, and the sudden, dramatic changes human activity is inflicting on the oceans delicate acoustic habitat — changes that threaten the ability of whales and other marine animals to prosper, to function, and ultimately, to survive. Pangolin Director: Katie Schuler Journey of a single pangolin, from the moment it is taken from the wild to its final destination in China. Filmed on location across three countries with the help of reformed poachers and wildlife enforcement officers, the film acts as a surrogate for an estimated hundred thousand pangolins that are poached and smuggled annually in SE Asia and Africa. Pangolin offers audiences the opportunity to experience the life, death and afterlife of one of the most illegally trafficked and endangered mammals on the planet. Monarchs: The Milkweed Mission Director: Turk Pipkin The latest conservation film from director Turk Pipkin and The Nobelity Project, The Milkweed Mission tracks the amazing year-long path of North Americas main Monarch butterfly migration, documenting threats from logging and community conservation challenges in the winter reserves in Michoacán, Mexico to loss of essential pollinators and milkweeds due to droughts, climate change and chemical agriculture across the U.S. and into the northern migration range in Canada.

Is Genesis History

7:oopm. Hosted by Del Tackett. Creator of the Truth Project. What exactly happened, -In the beginning …- and in the time that followed...
