Owl’s Acre Equine
Center offers every person the physical, emotional
and mental rewards of properly communicating and bonding
with a horse. Among the physical benefits are
flexibility, balance and muscle strength, while
the emotional benefits include confidence, patience, and
self-esteem. These benefits are the by-products of
another focus of ours: the development of a willing
partnership between horse and its rider. This only
happens under the conditions of trust, respect,
determination and integrity—values taught and held high
at Owl's Acre Equine Center.
Our mission is to see
the ability in each person and help them see it in
themselves. We provide a nurturing atmosphere with a
respectful, caring and well-trained staff. We offer
equine programs for children, youth and adults with all
types of abilities, or disabilities in a safe,
controlled environment.
Our methods of teaching build a
foundation of trust, (with a horse) teaches us about
ourselves, allows us to recognize our patterns of
behavior, and helps us build healthy relationships with
others.
At Owl's Acre Equine Center!
we pride ourselves on running a high-quality
program based on the safety and management standards set forth by the
internationally recognized Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA).
Our programs are designed to accommodate riders of all age ranges, with a
strong focus on the beginner and novice level rider. We offer
lessons in both English and Western riding styles.
Horses:
Horses offer an “honest mirror” for us to observe our
choices, helping us improve life skills. Our horses are
hand-picked for their calmness and professionally
trained to be safe around all people. Safety gear is
worn and safe practices emphasizes at all times while
students are near the horses.

refine an older horse. Our program is on a (60 day

Clinics:
Owl’s Acre Equine Center offers clinics covering the
basic skills of natural horsemanship from beginning to
advanced classes. At the beginner level you will learn
the basic games of communication that horses play with
each
other and how to break down the Prey-predator barrier.
You will create a language with which to communicate
with your horse, and teach your horse on the ground the
things you want him to understand when you are on his
back. At the intermediate level you will build on the
basic skills and learn, through a series of tasks, to
develop your communication skills with your horse to a
point where your horse will not only do what you ask but
do it willingly and with respect. Finally, you will
learn more about natural riding dynamics and have
opportunity to begin a conversation with your horse
while you are in the saddle.
Therapeutic Programs:
Anyone born with a disadvantage, physical or mental, can
come here and learn to overcome it. Traditional
education methods leave some children feeling
frustrated, whereas a correctly designed horse program
will help them learn to achieve.
Horses, as teachers, send little bits of information at
a time. We process the information immediately and
convert it to experience. In every stride, information
is passed back and forth between the horse and rider in
a constant stimuli and response cycle. This
bi-directional communication is especially effective for
children who don’t respond well to traditional teaching
methods.
In addition to the warmth and security of close physical
contact with a horse, therapeutic riding also gives the
rider opportunities to strive for new goals and can help
develop concentration and self-discipline. During a
riding class, social and language skills also seem to
prosper. Then finally, the opportunity to bond with and
control a horse can have a lasting positive impact upon
self-esteem.
Mental or Emotional Disabilities:
A child or adult who cannot control his frustrations or
behavior in regular activities may learn enough control
over his horse to ride well, to assist in teaching
others, and even to compete in recreational shows. The
person now has a better chance to go on to believe he is
a winner in life, in a non-competitive environment.
Physical Disabilities:
For people with disabilities, time spent on horseback is
much more than a relaxing afternoon ride. On horseback,
those with special needs can experience a freedom of
motion not obtainable on the ground. At Owl’s Acre
Equine Center, Brent Semingson, has developed a unique
approach to therapeutic riding. Brent has found that by
riding with the student he can more realistically
transfer the movement of the horse to the student,
promoting a beneficial aid for physical disabilities of
any kind. When the rhythm of the horse’s walk is
successfully transferred to the student, it stimulates
and relaxes muscle groups, duplicates the normal human
gait, improves balance.
Opportunities for Volunteers:
You can make a difference! Learn and reap the rewards of
helping those who cannot help themselves. Volunteers are
an essential part of our program. Many of the volunteers
work directly with the riders. Without these
“side-walkers”, “leaders” and “ back-riders” the
students would not be able to ride. Volunteers can also
participate in the day-to-day operations of the program.
No horse experience is necessary. There are many
committees that need volunteers such as fundraising,
recruiting, and public relations to name a few.
